Unique singer gets a biopic to match In "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story," the director Todd Haynes commandeered a collection of Barbie dolls and Carpenters hits (Haynes reportedly got clearance for neither) to depict imagined scenes from the late vocalist's life. That 1987 film is a creepy little wonder. Haynes clearly loves the music and the Carpenter ethos, so you know you're in the presence of an obsessive character trying to work out his obsession in an arresting way. |
