Why has one made such a spectacular transition to adulthood, while the other languishes in the muck of her own misdeeds?
The same week that Britney Spears' downward spiral garnered more ink than the latest Indonesian natural disaster, her former paramour, Justin Timberlake, further cemented his position as one of the decade's most respected pop stars.

Devereaux is probably the only pro athlete with both a Stanley Cup and an avant-garde record label to his name.
WHEN Toronto Maple Leafs center Boyd Devereaux caught a set from the Canadian psych-rock group Black Mountain at a Phoenix record store in 2004, he was so blown away that he let the band stay over at his house that night. The group was grateful for a place to crash but was taken aback by Devereaux's day job, then a member of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Nina Nastasia and Jim White squeeze blood from very small and simple stones.
ROCK'S great duos have always been about maximalism: the folk-rock earnestness of Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, the hooks of Daryl Hall and John Oates, the CinemaScope sound of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart.

The tawdry rock band isn t shy about its love for Queen's arena theatrics.
WHEN glammy scuzz-rockers Louis XIV needed to accurately capture the sound of Brian May's guitar for their version of Queen's theme to "Flash Gordon," they went straight to the source: They used the actual Eventide phaser pedal that May played on the original version.

Guns & neuroses: 'The Brave One' blends a girl, a gun and a conscience
"The Brave One" is "Death Wish" with a guilty conscience, and while it may be a bit of a hypocrite as vigilante thrillers go, the internal contradictions of the thing make for a very interesting picture. Ever since Shakespeare toned up the revenge tragedy with "Hamlet," storytellers have been elevating genre pieces as provocatively as their talents allow. I'm not suggesting "The Brave One" (dull title) is Shakespeare or "Taxi Driver," but it's the work of first-rate filmmakers and actors doing everything they can to find the truth in the pulp and the bloodlust.

Mr. Woodcock a fraction of a worthwhile comedy
Not that we advocate doing this sort of thing, but let's say you find yourself at the multiplex, and the first 20 minutes of "Mr. Woodcock" happen to correspond with the 20 minutes you need to waste before your movie of choice begins. Those are the ideal 20 minutes to spend with this marginally promising--but ultimately unfunny--comedy.

in 'Elah,' Jones channels the pain of a soldier's parent
A lot of very good films have a distinct drop-off point, usually occasioned when the gods of character are shoved aside for the gods of plot. "In the Valley of Elah" is one of those very good pictures.

'Eastern Promises' a slow cooker that delivers
An unusually strong crime thriller, "Eastern Promises" comes from director David Cronenberg, a meticulous old-school craftsman of a type that is becoming increasingly rare. It's difficult to describe his technique, which is vivid but not flashy. Similarly this tale, about the sinister workings of the Russian mob in modern-day London, is gripping and often spectacularly violent--more about the bathhouse murder sequence later--but never salaciously so.

There were moments in recent years when Wilco appeared to be aging gracefully, its concerts proceeding with the refined precision of a middle-age art-rock band. Pretty, graceful, but somewhat predictable. On one tour, there were even sepia-toned abstract-art videos.

Philip K. Dick's children work to ensure the influential author's cinematic legacy.
PHILIP K. DICK, the science-fiction author who struggled for years with personal demons, never saw "Blade Runner," the first Hollywood adaptation of his writing. He died of a stroke just four months shy of its release in 1982. His grieving daughter Isa, then 15, remembers going to see the film in a San Rafael theater hoping that it might, somehow, keep part of her father alive.

"The O.C." creator Josh Schwartz is swapping coasts, basing his sexy new teen drama on the deb set of Manhattan's Upper East Side.
JOSH SCHWARTZ was shooting the finale of "The O.C." in Pasadena last season when he began to get an inkling about the potential of his next project. ¶ "All these teenagers from the neighborhood had gathered, upset the show was ending," said Schwartz, the young writer-producer who created the gauzy Newport Beach teen soap. "They said, 'You have to do another show for us.' " ¶ In fact, Schwartz told them, he was starting work on a television series based on the popular "Gossip Girl" books. ¶ "They all started screaming," he recalled. "I thought, whoa -- this is deep." ¶ Set in the rarefied milieu of Manhattan's Upper East Side, the novels by Cecily von Ziegesar have an ardent following among teens, who lap up the tales of a set of pampered private-school students and the anonymous Gossip Girl blog that snarkily documents their misdeeds. That built-in fan base -- according to its publisher, the 11-book series has more than 4.5 million copies in print -- combined with Schwartz's reputation as a purveyor of smart, sexy teen drama, has helped generate feverish anticipation for the CW television show long before its Wednesday premiere.

In 'Pushing Daisies,' a humble baker is able to resurrect the deceased. Word is, this new ABC series has a lot of life.
IN 17 days, 20 hours and zero minutes, the television series that painstakingly marks time to show us that it never stands still will finally premiere. ¶ And on that third day of October, ABC will introduce the story of Ned the Pie Maker. ¶ Played by the Lee Pace, Ned is the likable protagonist of "Pushing Daisies," a sentimental, romantic, modern fairy tale that has accomplished what few shows in the medium can: pure distinction. Because Ned is not just a gifted pie maker. With a single touch, Ned can bring all dead things back to life: people, animals, plants, even fruit. ¶ But as creator Bryan Fuller ("Dead Like Me" and "Wonderfalls") writes in the pilot, "It was a gift that not only gave -- it took." That is, the dead can live again only for one minute without consequence. Any longer, someone else dies in his or her place. ¶ If this seems sad or a tad morose, be assured that you will have a big fat smile on your face throughout the course of the episode. Director Barry Sonnenfeld's ("Men in Black") vibrant color palette and penchant for wide-angle lenses effectively turn the show into a storybook and leave viewers almost tasting Ned's pies, feeling the grass under Boy Ned's feet and hearing Ned's heart beating when he is reunited with the love of his life.

Spurred by the success of "Heroes," the networks get mysterious.
This is shaping up to be network television's year of magical thinking. ¶ As the parade of fall premieres bangs by in the coming weeks, viewers can't help but notice how many prime-time lead characters have acquired supernatural powers. ¶ A single touch from the hero of ABC's "Pushing Daisies" can raise the dead, but another tap, and it's a one-way ticket back to the undiscovered country. The protagonist of NBC's "Journeyman" inexplicably and unexpectedly time-travels; a teen in the CW's "Reaper" becomes a bounty hunter for the devil; and a gumshoe in CBS' "Moonlight" is a human-friendly vampire.

In this new film, guitars and amps are still on hand, but the real action revolves around webcams, blogs, flash-animated comic strips and camera phones.
It's easy to be cynical about the gloomy state of pop music today, especially when much of the news is made by knuckleheads like 50 Cent, who will hopefully follow through on his promise to retire now that his new CD failed to open at No. 1, and Britney Spears, who made a sad spectacle of herself at the MTV Video Music Awards.
