Half of the pop-hit duo, which Friday plays the Hollywood Bowl, embraces changes in the industry.

The crosswinds of pop culture are curious and fickle, and right now they are giving Hall & Oates, of all people, a rare cool breeze at their backs.

HBO's 'Tell Me You Love Me' is too sour to bear.

IF St. Theresa is to be believed, more tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones. Which puts HBO's new dramatic series "Tell Me You Love Me" smack in the Answered Prayers category. I am, I admit, one of those wearisome people who, after watching some perfectly nice romantic drama, will heave an irritated sigh and whine: "Why don't they ever do a show about what marriage is really like?" Now, thanks to "Tell Me You Love Me," I know.

In Season 6, Larry David is trying too hard to be the curmudgeon everyone loves or hates.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" is back Sunday on HBO, and it's hard to know how to feel about this. Forget red and blue, America is divided into Larry David worshipers and those who just don't get it. Certainly no one pokes fun at the idle, self-absorbed rich like David, and as our economic gap widens in anticipation of la deluge , that is a much-needed national service. (If, of course, you can overlook the fact that he himself is getting richer by the minute doing it.)

'3:10 to Yuma' -- 2 1/2 stars

Two of the finest westerns of the 1950s traded in a particularly wily brand of snake-charming antagonist, an outlaw being brought to frontier justice but vexing the vulnerable protagonists something fierce en route. One was "The Naked Spur," in which Robert Ryan's manic chortle sent shivers down the spine of James Stewart. The other was "3:10 to Yuma," a terrific and melancholy wonder featuring Glenn Ford in his most compelling portrayal, opposite Van Heflin, whose woeful bearing always made him easy prey for demons, human or psychological.

'The Brothers Solomon' -- 1 star

The peals of silence destined to greet "The Brothers Solomon," the not-funniest comedy of the year so far, are doubly depressing because the film squanders several funny performers. My favorite is Kristen Wiig, the "Saturday Night Live" regular who was so good as the undermining E! Network lackey in "Knocked Up." Here she's stuck playing third banana to Will Arnett ("Arrested Development" and perhaps one too many voiceovers) and Will Forte, another "SNL" cast member and the "Solomon" screenwriter.

'Exiled' -- 3 stars

No less than "3:10 to Yuma," Hong Kong director Johnnie To's "Exiled" belongs to the genre of the western. It favors the iconic strut of hired killers striding in slow motion toward Destiny and the camera, when they're not standing stock still, placed in a widescreen landscape just so.

'Deep Water' -- 3 stars

Almost 40 years ago, London's Sunday Times newspaper put up the Golden Globe trophy for the first person to sail around the world, non-stop and alone, and a prize of roughly $12,000 to the sailor to do it the fastest. Sailors could begin at any time between June 1 and Oct. 31, 1968.

"It is what it is and that is all it ever can be" would be a good way to describe "Hatchet." The film has its limitations and works well within them.

As the world mourns the renowned tenor, Tribune critic John von Rhein measures Pavarotti's impact on classical music

If success can be equated with glorious natural talent, unprecedented fame and the ability of a classical musician to give pleasure to millions of people, then Luciano Pavarotti's 46-year career was a success unparalleled in the history of opera.

Trumpeter Corey Wilkes has been so busy in so many different bands in recent years that he rarely alights for very long in any one city. Moreover, whether he's playing a straight-ahead session at Andy's Jazz Club or pushing into exotic territory with the Art Ensemble of Chicago in worldwide tours, he avoids easy categorization.

The 'Harry Potter' star, who says he finds the work exciting, plays an orphan.

TALKING to Daniel Radcliffe on the phone from Ireland where he's playing Rudyard Kipling's son, Jack, in the World War I TV movie "My Boy Jack," you'd never guess the "Harry Potter" star is England's wealthiest teen. Despite the heady $50-million deal he's just signed to make the final two boy-wizard films, he talks like a young actor still honing his craft, still rather wide-eyed and engaged at this whole filmmaking idea.

KKJZ host José Rizo presides over a mulitcultural group of the style's finest players.

Like most employees caught in a change of management, longtime DJ José Rizo worried about his future when a new boss took over earlier this year at L.A.'s only full-time jazz station, KKJZ-FM (88.1). What would it mean for his 17-year run as host of "Jazz on the Latin Side," a weekly show spotlighting the best in Latin jazz from across the world? Rizo, 50, worried that his program might lose its prime Friday night slot. Then he took a call from the station's new general manager, Saul Levine.

Alien creatures, sexually ambiguous humans and the occasional pterodactyl interact in this 'Dr. Who' offshoot.

A dark and splendid "Dr. Who" spinoff with overtones of "Men in Black" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Torchwood" (premiering tonight on BBC America) concerns a super-secret organization "outside the government, beyond the police" whose job it is to keep an eye on visiting aliens and, when possible, steal their stuff. Specifically, it concerns the Cardiff branch -- Torchwood Three, out of four. (The main branch has been destroyed, and another has just gone missing.)

"Made in L.A.," a "P.O.V." documentary that airs Sunday night on KCET, tells the story of a three-year boycott and lawsuit by criminally underpaid and overworked garment workers from a host of Los Angeles sweatshops -- many, it remains easy to forget, operating within walking distance of City Hall, Parker Center and this newspaper -- against the clothing retailer Forever 21. (The campaign was based on the principle that since the retailer sets the price, it is ultimately responsible for the wage that is paid to the worker.)

Andrew Dominik's take on Jesse James is psychological, with nary a genre cliché in sight.

Andrew Dominik was more than vaguely interested in the movie that the research audience recruiter was hawking. "Do you want to see a western with Brad Pitt and Sam Shepard?" the recruiter asked the Australian filmmaker, not knowing who he was. Dominik asked for more information, but he didn't really need to know -- after all, he wrote and directed the movie.

Having bolstered numerous films as supporting player, Casey Affleck heads further into the spotlight in two new films, including one by sibling Ben.

IT wasn't intended to play out this way. There was no master plan. And yet back-to-back fall movie releases are pushing Casey Affleck out of the supporting-sidekick category and into the ranks of leading men, edging him ever closer to seeing the disappearance of the comma that often follows his name before the words "brother of Ben Affleck."
