Affymetrix detects the secrets of human genetics. Its GeneChip system and other products identify, analyze, and manage genetic data to help develop new treatments for infectious diseases, cancer, and other ailments. The firm sells its products directly to customers, including Schering AG, Amgen, and Roche. Affymetrix and Millennium Pharmaceuticals are developing the next generation of GeneChip technology. The company owns about 40% of Perlegen Sciences, which uses Affymetrix's technology to map genetic variations called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and tie them to human health for drug development.
