Advanced Silicon Materials produces ultrapure silicon used to make semiconductors. It also offers silane gas (SiH4), which is likewise used in microchip production. Its polycrystalline silicon, or polysilicon, is available in the form of powder, teardrop-shaped chips, chunks, and rods. The business was originally established by Union Carbide and sold to Komatsu in 1990. In 2005 Komatsu agreed to sell a 75% stake in Advanced Silicon Materials to Norway's Renewable Energy Corp.
