Think of Tyson Foods as an 800-pound chicken -- with a bullish attitude. Already the largest chicken producer, Tyson's purchase of beef and pork giant IBP Fresh Meats made it the largest meat processing company in the world, serving retail, wholesale, and food service customers in the US and more than 80 countries overseas. In addition to fresh meats, Tyson produces processed and pre-cooked meats, refrigerated and frozen prepared foods, and animal feeds. Its chicken operations are vertically integrated -- the company hatches the eggs and then supplies contracted growers with chicks and feed. Don Tyson, son of the founder, controls 80% of Tyson's voting power.

|
Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) knows how to grind and squeeze a fortune out of humble plants. It is one of the world's largest processors of oilseeds, corn, and wheat. Its main offerings include soybean, peanut, and other oilseed products. From corn, it produces syrups, sweeteners, citric and lactic acids, and ethanol, among other items. ADM also produces wheat and durum flour for bakeries and pasta makers, and it processes cocoa beans and has a variety of other business interests, ranging from fish farming to a regional railroad. It has interests in food processors in Asia, Canada, Europe, South America, and the US.

At one time a subsidiary of ConAgra, UAP Holding manufactures and distributes crop production products, ranging from seeds to fertilizers to pest and weed killers. UAP Holding markets its products under the brands ACA, Salvo, Savage, and Shotgun. In 2003 ConAgra sold former UAP Holding units Hacco and Hess & Clark to Neogen Corporation. Later that year, it sold UAP Holding itself to investment firm Apollo Management for about $600 million.

Monsanto Company
|
Corn the size of a Trident missile? Not quite, but Monsanto is all about bioengineered crops. Monsanto helps farmers grow more crops by applying biotechnology, genomics, and molecular breeding technology to herbicides and seeds. Its flagship product, Roundup, is the world's #1 herbicide. Monsanto also produces genetically altered seeds (cotton, corn, soybean, and canola) that tolerate Roundup and resist bugs; it estimates that more than 70% of the world's insect- and herbicide-resistant crops bears its stamp. It also produces Asgrow, Hartz, and DEKALB seeds. Chairman and CEO Hugh Grant announced in June 2003 a restructuring of the company, the goal of which is increased public acceptance of bioengineered crops.

Koch Industries is the real thing when there's money to be made. Koch (pronounced "coke") is the second-largest private US company, after Cargill. Koch Industries' operations (through its numerous subsidiaries) include asphalt, chemicals, energy, fertilizers, fibers and intermediates, finance, minerals, petroleum, pulp and paper, ranching, securities, and trading. A subsidiary owns three refineries that can process about 787,000 barrels of crude oil daily. Koch subsidiaries also process natural gas liquids, and operate gas gathering systems and pipelines across North America. Brothers Charles and David Koch control the company, which in 2004 acquired INVISTA for $4.2 billion and merged it with its KoSa unit.
