Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell…oh wait, now you can!

For the past 17 years, there has been a lot of talk about the lack of talking by the homosexual community within the military. The “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” policy, which was put in by President Bill Clinton in order to allow men and women to serve regardless of their orientation, has been nothing short of controversy. Many felt that it was a subtle way to make members of the gay and lesbian community feel inferior and as though they have to be quiet about whom they are in order to function equally within society. So as President Barack Obama headed the repeal that was agreed upon with a vote of 65-31 in the Senate, many rejoiced.

But it seems that it isn’t just the Senate that agrees the repeal should’ve taken place, there are also many celebrities showing their excitement via twitter. Some of these celebrities include Ellen DeGeneres, Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Kathy Griffin, and Sophia Bush. Although most people are excited about the repeal, it has caused uproar as to what this exactly means. Regardless, it has been repealed and men and women can fight for our country…all the while being proud of their orientation. What seems evermore shocking? The government produced a poll throughout the different branches of the military to see whether or not they would work with a gay or lesbian member on their team and 69% said they suspect they already do and 70% said they would continue to do so.

The DADT policy will now go down in infamy, as well as make its way on to that “remember when” list that our country seems to have a rather quick habit of adding to.
