Four Loko (Source)
For those who are familiar with this drink, we know it has hit the news hard in the past few weeks. It has been an outrage to teens around America to see the drink they love get shut down. The malt beverages Four Loko, Joose, and Moonshot are other wise known as “liquid cocaine” to some health officials. Is it really that bad for you or is it that teens these days are out of control drinking anyways?
These canned beverages have made bank this year with college kids rushing out to stock up. Not only does it get you “drunk fast” but cost no more than $3.00 per can! They are caffeinated alcoholic beverages which as we all know is deadly. This has been recently noticed as it does not now meet the FDA’s standard for safety. According to Kimberly Dennis, a medical director in Chicago, It’s pretty clear by the amount of people showing up in emergency rooms that mixing caffeine with alcohol has health risks that are bigger than just caffeine or just alcohol.”
Most teens are bashing officials with their call to ban it nation wide as it is a highly popular beverage. This drink was easy to get due to the fact that it is and was sold is most gas stations. The FDA has explained how the companies producing these drinks have 14 days to respond to this argument. They may either defend the “safety” of their drink or allow their products to be taken off the market.
Four states up north have already banned the drink, and colleges are beginning to as well. Cases were documented of teens blacking out and showing up at the hospital with severe illnesses.
Does the fact that this beverage is caffeinated apply directly to these illnesses or is it bound to happen with any and all types of alcohol? We will wait as these companies take their cans off the shelves or prepare to make more.
