It’s very easy to decide that you want a smart phone, but the choice you have to make between dozens of models currently present on the market can be very hard and requires many hours of research. You have to figure out the characteristics and options of each phone that you can use in order to make a faster and of course, better decision.
Almost 1 out of 10 mobile phone users is using a smart phone, a computer – mobile phone combination that has more advanced feature than a regular mobile phone. As the prices of the phones are dropping, and features and applications become more and more useful, many of the users that do not have a smart phone are thinking about buying one.
Most top models have the same prices, around 200 dollars, with a two years contract, although the service costs may vary. Some newer models are available at lower prices.For example, if you can find Samsung Omnia and Nokia Surge even for 30 dollars, if you are going to sign a two years contract. Do not forget that, to get these low prices, you have to pick some expensive subscription options, and for some options you have to pay extra.
The first step you need to take is to establish which are the most important features for you. How fast and often do you have to use your email address? How important is the speed of the search engine? Do you rather have a bigger display or do you need a keyboard with bigger keys ? Do you want to make good quality photos ?
Between the X Droid, iPhone 4 and Blackberry, the quality of these features can vary, according to Michael Gikas, IT&C Editor at Consumer Reports. Here are the main advantages but also the disadvantages of the three phones:
Droid X: For internet addicts
The new Droid model, released last week by Motorola, can be the ideal choice for people that are using the mobile internet, because it includes the Google search engine. The devices that run on the Android operating system have been considered the “enemies” of iPhone phones because of the many features that make them competitive. Motorola added other options to the Droid X model, including an 8 mega pixels photo camera.
Advantages: With 12,7 cm long and 6,6 cm wide, Droid X has a 4.4 inch display, very suitable for users that want to be able to read properly the information online. In the review of this phone, Gikas appreciated the keyboard of the device, which also has the “Swype” options: it allows users to let their fingers slip on the keyboard, rather than lifting them when typing a word – and this without making mistakes.
” If you are searching for a mobile phone with a big screen, fast search engine and a trust worthy network, then go ahead and buy the Droid X” said Paul Eng, the person that analyzed this mobile phone for Consumer Reports.
Disadvantages: The Droid phones are big and heavy, not very suitable for our pockets. Eventually, some people are saying that the screen’s resolution is not as good as the resolution of iPhone 4.
iPhone 4: For multimedia addicts
It’s no longer a secret that iPhone is one of the most popular smart phones. Many people signed-up to get one before it’s release on June 24. Apple sold more than 1,7 million units in the first three days since the release.
If you like to take pictures and view videos on your phone, iPhone 4, with a very good resolution and fast streaming is the perfect choice.
Disadvantages: high resolution touch screen that makes reading very easy; two cameras that allow video chat and a 5 mega pixels photo camera with flash that takes very good pictures. Gikas also added the editing feature on the list of advantages. iPhone is very useful for users that like to play with options – iPhone serves as a platform more than 300.000 applications.
“If you are looking for a phone with a big screen, with many multimedia features and a good source for content, then pick the iPhone” Gikas says on the Consumer Reports web site.
Disadvantages: In the United States, the new iPhone 4 was criticized because it doesn’t have good signal, but for this problem the mobile phone operator was blamed, the operator that exclusively distributes the new iPhone, AT&T. Steve Jobs, the Apple founder, said that Apple is going to give away free protection cases for iPhone 4 users in order to compensate this problem.
BlackBerry: For email addicts
The Blackberry phones, attract a lot of attention from buyers because of the instant email options and it has it’s own set of features. The most important one is the constant update of the inbox without being connected to a server. Also, it’s a mobile phone very appreciated by business men because of its security measures, according to Gikas.
Advantages: In addition to this feature, Blackberry allows you to connect multiple email accounts to a common inbox, this way users no longer have to verify multiple sources. If when you are writing an email you like to use the thumbs, most Blackberry models have a QWERTY keyboard, which can be ideal for you. BlackBerry also has two touch screen models.
Disavantages: Some people are saying that the Blackberry models are not so good relating to video streaming and a bit slow on the Internet. The models with photo cameras are poor in mega pixels. For example, Blackberry curve, one of the most recent models, comes with a photo camera that only has 2 mega pixels. Another disadvantage is the fact that Blackberry models are pretty big, 11 cm height and 6 cm wide on average.
