Currently, if you are not using an anti virus software solution on your computer it may be very irresponsible of your part. The number of the diversity of the types of viruses online are so big, that the changes of getting infected even by simply visiting a web site are very high.
However, installing any anti virus solution is not enough. Not all programs are the same and not all anti virus applications are doing their job right. This is why we have the so called certified anti virus applications.
Certification is done based on some serious and solid tests. Testing an anti virus software is not so simply and cannot be done by everybody. There are specialized companies that are testing anti virus solutions on a regular basis.
AV Test is such a company. The people over at AV Test are recognized and appreciated for the anti virus applications tests they are making. Recently, they reviewed the most popular anti virus applications to see how good of a job they do on Windows 7.
How the test was done
The test lasted approximately 3 months and was conducted during April – June 2010. 3 features categories were considered for all the tested products: protection, recovery and functionality.
For each targeted feature an incremental note from 0 to 6 was given. The applications that received an average of more than 12 points received the AV Test certification. This distinction indicates users and companies the anti virus applications that are reliable and trust worthy.
The Good and The Bad!
17 anti virus applications were tested. Only 13 received certification, and four of them did not. The 13 anti virus software applications that received the certification are:
- Avira Premium Security Suite 10.0
- Kaspersky Internet Security 2010
- Panda Internet Security 2010
- Eset Smart Security 4.0
- F-Secure Internet Security 2010
- Symantec Norton Internet Security 2010
- Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0
- PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 7.0
- Webroot Internet Security Essentials 6.1
- Avast Internet Security 5.0
- AVG Internet Security 9.0
- BitDefender Internet Security Suite
- G Data Internet Security 2010/2011
And the applications that were not certified are:
- Norman Security Suite 8.0
- Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010
- BullGuard Internet Security 9.0
- McAfee Internet Security 2010
We have to mention the fact that, although only 4 applications were not certified, some big names can be found on this list, names like McAfee and Trend Micro. On the other hand, on the list of the ones that were certified we can also see the “young” anti virus solution from Microsoft, Security Essentials, which is free.

In every image we can see the testing criteria and the grades received by each applications. Very important are the grades for protection and cleaning. On the other hand, functionality should not be ignored. This can make the difference between two products with similar protection levels.
What are we going to pick ?
These tests shows us what anti virus solutions can handle, more or less, the current threats. They cannot say however what solution should we each use. In the end, picking a security solution implies a bit of subjectivity.
When picking an anti virus solution, besides the level of protection, each user can also take into consideration other criteria as well. We can consider, among other things: resources requirements, scanning speed, additional features or price. However, I can say that we will never pick a security solution that failed the AV Test.

La ora actuală, să nu ai instalat un antivirus pe un calculator conectat la Internet poate fi văzut deja ca un act de inconştienţă. Numărul şi diversitatea tipurilor de viruşi existenţi online sunt atât de mari, încât şansele să te infectezi, chiar şi doar intrând pe un site, sunt foarte mari.
Însă nu este suficient să instalezi orice antivirus. Nu toţi antiviruşii sunt la fel şi nu toţi îşi fac treaba la fel de bine. De aceea, există aşa-numiţi antiviruşi certificaţi.
Certificarea se face în urma unor teste solide. Testarea unui antivirus nu este chiar aşa de simplă şi nu poate fi realizată de către orice utilizator. Există companii specializate în testarea periodică a antiviruşilor.
O astfel de companie este AV Test. Cei de la AV Test sunt recunoscuţi şi apreciaţi pentru testele de antiviruşi pe care le realizează. Recent, aceştia au luat la puricat cei mai cunoscuţi antiviruşi pentru a vedea cât de bine se descurcă pe Windows 7.
Cum s-a făcut testul
Testul a durat aproximativ 3 luni şi a fost realizat în perioada aprilie – iunie 2010. Pentru toate produsele testate au fost avute în vedere 3 categorii de facilităţi: protecţie, reparare (dezinfectare) şi funcţionalitate.
Pentru fiecare funcţie vizată s-a acordat o notă incrementală de la 0 la 6. Antiviruşii care au obţinut o medie de peste 12 puncte au primit certificarea AV. Această distincţie este menită să indice utilizatorilor şi companiilor produsele antivirus pe care se pot baza.
Premianţii şi repetenţi
Au fost testaţi 17 antiviruşi. Dintre aceştia, 13 au primit notă de trecere, iar patru au picat. Cei 13 care au primit certificarea cuvenită sunt:

Repetenţii, cei care au picat testul, sunt:

De remarcat că, deşi au picat doar patru antiviruşi, pe lista repetenţilor apar nume grele precum McAfee şi Trend Micro. Pe de altă parte, printre premianţi se află destul de tânărul antivirus Microsoft, Security Essentials, acesta fiind gratuit.

În fiecare imagine se pot vedea criteriile de testare şi notele acordate pentru antiviruşii vizaţi. Foarte importante sunt notele pentru protecţie şi curăţare. Pe de altă parte, nici funcţionalitatea nu trebuie trecută cu vederea. Aceasta poate face diferenţa între două produse cu un nivel de protecţie asemănător.
