Facebook releases the Places service: socializing via GPS!

What it was only rumor for a long time has happened! Facebook released a GPS service. It’s named Facebook places and allows users to tell their friends their location, the hotel where they checked in, the restaurant where they ate and so on.

Facebook Places is based on the GPS support of mobile phones. Once users reach their desired location, they can use the Check feature to tell their friends their exact location. First, the service will display the locations in the respective area. Then, the user will pick the exact location from a list.

Facebook was careful this time to please the people that are sensitive about their privacy. The users are able to pick what information they want to make public, who can see them, and so on.

Places is the first attempt on Facebook on the GPS market. It’s not however the first service of this type. Aplications like Foursquare and Gowala already have a lot of experience in this area.

For the moment, Facebook Places will only be available in the United States and will be able to be used through the mobile site, or from the iPhone application. Eventually, the service will be made available or all Facebook users.
