Android might become the number 2 operating system in the world

The decision of Google to transform Android into an open source operating system is beginning to pay off: the platform might soon become the number 2 operating system in the world.

The Gartner IT Research and Consultancy firm in the US released their forecasts on the smartphones operating systems market, and Android is situated on the third place right after Research in Motion, with a 17,2% global market share.

Symbian is still on the first place with a 41,2% market share.

RIM should worry about their 18.2% they have. The evolution of the Android operating system from Google is more remarkable if we were to remember that last year this operating system had a market share of only 1.8%.

The android operating system has beaten Apple and many people anticipate that it will also go past RIM in a few months.

According to Gartner, what made Android so popular is the non-exclusive distribution. The strategy is very similar to the one of Microsoft.

So, just like Microsoft, Android is not tied down to a specific smartphone, and any hardware manufacturer can develop new devices based on this platform.

Also, it is anticipated that smart phones manufacturers will “battle” with each other to implement Android on their devices.

Its very simple! Android success cannot be transferred to all the models that are using this platform.
