Troubleshooting Windows XP, Frequent Windows XP Errors!

Share

1. Loading Error – This application Requires the Windows Installer to Run

The application was loaded wrong by the computer, it is located in an unavailable network location or needs to be reconfigured.

The solution: Reinstalling the application on a local disk unit. You have to ensure that you have access to the disk unit where the application was initially installed. Click on Start and My Network PLaces to view the disk units available. It’s possible to identify the installing kit and to run it through a simple click. Click on Start > Search, insert the name of the program ( for example Word.exe ) and try to start the installing process.

2. Blue screen and system reboot

Windows XP was configured to reboot in the moment when a  system error is found. When a STOP Type error appears, Windows will reboot so fast that you don’t have the time to see the error message. The behavior is frustrating because, if we can’t see a clear message we can’t get enough information to fix the problem.

Solution: Before fixing anything, you have to configure Windows XP not to automatically reboot when a system error is found.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties, then to go the Advanced registry. Click on Settings in the Startup and Recovery section and check the Automatically Restart option in the System failure section. Save your changes. From now on, Windows XP will display the error message and you can fix the problem.

3. Version incompatibility – Install.exe is not a valid win32 application

This error appears in the moment in which you try to install a program that was developed for an older Windows XP version.

Solution: you will not be able to install or run 15 bits applications on the 64 bits version of the Windows XP operating system. The only solution is to find a 32 or 64 bit version of the program you are trying to install. In some cases, it’s possible to get the 32 bits installation kit of the application.

4. The DVD unit reads DVD’s but nothing else

Your DVD rom is trying to read information from the CD’s but fails. Even more, it doesn’t even manage to read it’s own recovery disk. So, this is not a problem with the CD’s.

Solution: Go to Control Panel, and click on Sounds and Audio Devices, then on Hardware. Ensure that the list of CD/DVD drivers is listed along with the audio codecs. If these elements are not listed, go to Add/Remove hardware program, in Control Panel, to reinstall the drivers.

5. Illegal use of memory – System Restart has been Paused: continue with System Restart

And the message continues with the following information: ” Delete restoration data and process to system boot menu”. In translation, the computer has illegally accessed memory during the hibernation process. This error is often encountered, in some cases, with laptops that recover from the Sleep mode of Windows XP. Unfortunately, there is no option to return to Desktop and it’s possible to lose our unsaved data.

Use the Delete Restoration Data and Proceed to System Boot Menu to restart the system. If this error persists  you can set your laptop to use the standby mode instead of hibernation.

6. Error when copying files – The Target can not handle this type of document

Operating system error that appears when you right click a file and you use the Sent To command to copy a file that is not saved in My Documents to another location.

Solution: use the Sent To command from Desktop. The funny part is that this error wants to contradict it’s statue, because the files are copied but the system continues to display the same error message. It is recommended to install the latest Service pack available for Windows XP.

7. Corrupt Registry – WindowsXP could not start because the following fil is missing or Corrupt:\WINDOWS\SY TEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

The registry of your system is corrupt and needs to be restored. In this case we are dealing with one of the most serious errors you can get in Windows XP and the solution requires 4 steps. You have to copy some files from the Windows XP installation CD, reinstall the GUILD files ( globally unique identifier ), delete the system files that causes problems and also use the RestorePoint option. If the solution may appear to be complicated, actually the solution is very clear. Even so, replacing some files may destabilize the system. Even worse, you can replace other files that the one that were causing the problems or you can discover that the RestorePoint is corrupt. If you have an emergency copy of your most important files, then it’s highly recommended that you format your hard drive and reinstall your operating system.

8. Failed to connect – Acces was denied because the user name and/or password was invalid on the domain

Error message that tells you that your computer has failed to connect to the Internet. The server says that the username or password, does not exist.

Solution: enter the password just the way you received it from your ISP, along with the name of the user or other connection settings. Make sure you do not have CAPS LOCK activated.

9. Saving your settings error

This error message appears when Windows XP freezes when shutting down. The computer is stalling and you can’t do anything to stop it. The source of this problem is an IME editor that you installed and does not work properly.

Solution: Install the latest Service Pack version of WindowsXP.

10. Freezing : Internet explorer – Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

Unfortunately, there is no universal valid reason for which Internet Explorer freezes and by extension it has no solution. Even so, one of the most frequent causes is the software conflict between  Internet Explorer and an add-on ( like Google Toolbar, or Yahoo Toolbar ). If you get frequent error messages of the Internet browser we recommend you disable all your installed add-ons. Carefully monitor the behavior of the application and if you notice that the problems have disappeared you can try to reactivate the add-ons, one at a time, until you discover the add-on that caused the problems. Uninstall that add-on permanently. Or you can try to use another browser like Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Opera.
