Being a driver is not the easiest job in the world and it’s not without risks. And this is not because driving a vehicle is too hard or requires some special abilities. The risks come because of the safety of each driver and passenger depends on the other drivers you may encounter on route and also depends on hazard. The most smoothest and safest roads in the world have some tragic histories because of dozens of accidents. Still, there there some cases in which some roads, highways, mountain routs are very dangerous and tragic accidents often occurs there.
Col De Turini, France
At 1.600 meters above sea level, Col De Turini is a mountain road in the Alps, South of France. It’s part of a 32 km’s long route of the Monte Carlo Rally championship, road that contains around 34 very difficult curves but also portions where racers can reach more than 180 km/h.
It is one of the most inciting and most provocative roads on Earth. The road was also presented in the first episode of the 10th season of the Top Gear TV Show, during which the hosts of the show adventured in searching for the most extreme driving route in the world. In it’s highest point, Col De Turini reaches an altitude of 1607 meters. From North, the road starts with a dazzling series of 180 degrees curves
Stelvio, Italy
Located in the Eastern Alps in Italy, Stelvio connects Valtellina with Merano and both of them to the high valley of Adige. This mountain route is situated at 2700 altitude above sea level. It’s difficult to drive your car on this road especially because the 48 very difficult curves. With a maximum altitude of 2757 meters, Stelvio is the highest road East of the Alps and the second in the entire Alps mountains after the Col de Islseran road. Although this may be a less dangerous route compared to the rest of the routes presented in this article, it has the ability to cut the breath of people driving on it. The most difficult and spectacular driving space takes place in the portion from Prato.
Leh Manali Highway, India
The Leh Manali highway is situated in India and it’s spread on a total distance of 475 km’s through the Himalaya mountains. The highway crosses one of the most tallest mountain areas in the world, with altitudes between 2000 and 3000 meters above sea level. The highway is one of the most complicated in the world, a road that takes the best out of drivers, and the dangers are also many. The highway was built and maintained by the Indian Army.
The Road of Death, Bolivia
The Yungas route, also known as “El Camino de la Muerte” or “The Road of Death” is a mountain route spread on 70 km’s. Famous for it’s dangers, the road was cataloged in 1995 as the most dangerous route on Earth.
Hell’s Highway, Russia
The last 1000 km’s of the Russian Federal Highway between Moscow and Yarkutsk is named Lena Highway because the road is parallel with the Lena river only until Yarkutsk. Yarkutsk is considered to be one of the most coldest cities in the world. But, surprisingly, during the summer the road becomes totally inaccessible. Every times it rains the road transforms itself into a muddy swamp, which makes driving very hard. Because this is the only road to the Siberian city, the traffic becomes very heavy and crowded and driving is even more complicated than general.
The Russian Georgian Military Roads
When they are not covered with snow, they transform themselves into some of the hardest muddy roads in the world. These isolated highways are probable capable of covering an entire car with snow or mud. Still, Lada cars doesn’t seam to have any problems in going on this road. Situated in the Caucaz mountains, the military roads should be maintained by the Russian Army, which explains that reason why they are not very maintained. During the winter, the road is almost inaccessible. This road connects Russia with George and it is thought that this road has a strategic importance for both countries.
Guoliang, China
The magnificent tunnel route in the Taihang mountains was built by 13 villagers, lead by their lider, Shen Mingxin and it took almost 5 years to complete the work. Many locals lost their lives in the accidents during the construction of the tunnel, but others replaced them all the time. The tunnel was opened on May 1, 1977. 1.200 meters long, the tunnel located in the Henan province is 5 meters tall and 4 meters wide. Nicknamed as the road that doesn’t forgive any mistakes, the accidents inside the tunnel are mostly due to the drivers negligence.
Halsema Highway, Philippines
The road is almost 240 km’s long and most of it doesn’t have any asphalt. The goes through high rocks and doesn’t have any protection measures. All of these are making this road very difficult to drive on especially when it rains. Annually many accidents are recorded on this route. It is surely one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
El Espinazo del Diablo
El Espinazo del Diablo or Devil’s Spine is a mountain route in Durango, Mexico. Driving safely on this road takes around five hours and represented for a long time the only road from Durango to Mazatlan Sinaloa. Also, there are many stories and warnings about this road. But, the route is very well maintained and there are many warning signs that mark all dangerous places. There are some very tight curves so tight that some trucks require all the road in order to make a turn.
