Test the internet speed on your mobile phone!

Share

Mobile internet has become very very popular nowadays. This is because more and more people are using the mobile internet each day. But have you ever wondered, how fast is your mobile internet connection ?

It’s good to know the speed of your mobile internet connection to know if the operator keeps it’s promises. Sometimes, 3G and 3.5G marketing slogans are not living up to their promises.

So, you have a mobile phone that supports HDSPA, which, based on it’s version, it can reach speeds of up to 7 – 10 Mbps. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will actually use this speed. Usually, the speed offered by mobile operators is much slower than the one your phone can support. If your mobile phone can support, let’s say 10 Mbps, it’s all for nothing if your mobile operator only offers you tens or hundreds of kbps.

For these reasons, it’s a good idea to test the mobile internet connection of your mobile phone.

Just like the PC internet, mobile internet can also be tested with the help of some web sites. All you have to do is visit such a web site using the browser of your mobile phone, start the test and wait for it to finish and display the results.

You have to use a standard web browser, a browser that makes a direct connection. Opera Mini is not recommended for such a test. It redirects the data to their own servers when they are compressed and then relayed back to the client.

Such a web site is mobilespeedtest.com. Click on the “run speed test” link and wait. After a few short tests, the result will be displayed in red. You will be able to see on the same page how your speed is compared to other types of connections.

Another web site where you can test your mobile internet connection is dslreports.com/mspeed. It allows you to pick the quantity of data which which testing is going to be made. The higher the quantity, the more relevant the test is going to be.

If you get an error that says that that test couldn’t be done because of the speed is to fast, you need to pick a lower quantity of data. You can choose up to 1 MB.

There are chances that the test shows that your speed is much under what you should have or slower than what your mobile operator promised. Even in the areas with 3G or 3.5G coverage you will notice that the speed doesn’t live up to the expectations.

Speeds can be different from area to area, based on the coverage and network.

  1. I’ve stumbled upon you blog while looking for a speed test. I’ve already tried the two you’ve mentioned, the first does not display the correct speed as it gets some error while doing the test, don’t know if its a temporary server problem or something serious. And the dslspeed test refuses to work as my phone does not support javascript.
I’ve found this iPhone speed test http://iphonespeedtest.com/speedtest also works on other handsets.

  2. Thanks for sharing this article. I just checked internet speed on my mobile and found that it is very less than what my mobile service provider committed. Can you please share some ways to increase it on mobile.
