HOW TO Install Ubuntu directly from Windows without using the installation CD or image

Share

Users that want to install Ubuntu but they don’t want to create a special partition for it or they don’t have enough resources to install it on a virtual system, we recommend that they use the Wubi Installer, an application that allows you to install Ubuntu directly from Windows ( installing Ubuntu with the help of Wubi is similar to the installation of any Windows application ). Further more, you don’t have to create an installation CD, because Wubi comes with Ubuntu Live CD.

How to install Ubuntu in Windows using Wubi Installer

- after you downloaded wubi.exe, double click on it to start the installation process.

- in the open window select the partition you want to install, the space allotted, language and the linux version you want to install, in this case, Ubuntu.

- type a password for your users then click on Install.

- after the installation process has been completed, click on Finish – you will have to reboot your computer, but it’s up to you if you want to install it after the installation or later.

How to Boot the computer in Ubuntu

To be able to boot from Ubuntu after it was installed using Wubi, you have to restart the computer.

In Windows Boot Manager you will notice that you now have the possibility to pick between Ubuntu and Windows.

The first time it boots, Ubuntu will require a few additional minutes to finalize the installation, then you have to restart the computer again which will also show you the Windows Boot Manager. After you select Ubuntu from the manager, Grub Bootloader will open where you can choose to boot in Ubuntu, start Recovery Mode or to return to Windows Boot Manager.

After you have installed Ubuntu you can opt to boot from it as default from Windows, using the Advanced System Settings / Startup and Recovery option.

How to uninstall Ubuntu after installing it with Wubi Installer

For those who want to uninstall Ubuntu, the process is very simple: boot in Windows then go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program and double click on Ubuntu to uninstall it.

After Ubuntu has been uninstalled, the computer will normally boot in Windows, and your computer will have no trace that Ubuntu was ever installed.
