The power plans of a laptop are the hardware and system settings that manage the way in which your computer uses power, in order to conserve it when it runs only on the battery without being hooked up to a power source, or to maximize the performance of your operating system.

Windows 7 comes with three preset power plans: Balanced, Power Saver, and High Performance.

However, if you are not happy with the default power plans that Windows provides, you can create your own power plan, based on your requirements.

How to create a new power plan for your laptop

- open Control Panel and click on Hardware & Sound > Power Options

- In the left panel click on Create a Power Plan

- Select the category for your new plan ( Balanced, Power Saver, High Performance ) then choose a name for it.

- in the power plan creation window specify the settings for luminosity ( Dim on Display ), Turn Off Display and Sleep then click on Create.

That’s it. Your new power plan will appear in the list and you can select it was an active plan anytime you want.

How to edit an existent power plan

- in Power Options, without activating or disabling the respective power plan, click on Change Plan Settings.

- after you finished making the changes, click on Save Changes ( You can also modify the advanced settings from Change Advanced Power Settings ).

How to delete a power plan from the Control Panel

- select the plan you wish to delete and then click on Change Plan Settings

- at inactive plans you will notice that in theĀ  lower left part, under Changed Advanced Settings you can find the Delete this Plan option.
