Google has a new index, Caffeine, 50% faster than the old one

Most users haven’t probably heard about the index of a search engine. What you have to know is that the index is responsible with the relevancy and frequency the results are displayed when you are searching for something. And you also have to know that Google, the most important and popular search engine in the world now has a new index.

The new Google index is named Caffeine and offers a series of advantages compared to the old index. Caffeine is bigger, and faster than the old index with 50%.

Over the last years, the content of web sites has increased a lot. And it hasn’t increased only as quantity, but also regarding the forms in which it can be found ( images, videos, real time updates, and so on ). The content is more complex now than it was when the old index was developed by Google.

Caffeine was designed especially to bind together all types of content. More important than the size of the index is it’s relevancy. If you are searching for something and you don’t find whatever you are looking for even if you get million of results, then it’s useless. So, the new index, according to Google, will provide more relevant results.

Caffeine is also better than the old index regarding updating frequency as well. If the old index was build out of multiple layers, some sites being updated more often then others, Caffeine is going to create an global and continue update. This means that new sites and the new content from already established web sites will appear faster in result pages.

To make an impression about the data quantity with which the new Google index works with, Google released some statistics:

- thousands of pages are indexed every second

- hundreds of thousands of Giga Bytes are processed each day.

- a single data base can reach 100 million GB.
