The representatives o the biggest music company in the world, Universal Music Group International, admitted that pirated music is a phenomenon that cannot be stopped.
” Can you stop pirated music? No, you can’t. Can we make pirated music unacceptable socially? Yes we can, but this has to be our ambition world wide” said Francis Keeling, director of digital department of Universal Music Group International at a music convention in Brighton.
He also said that there are some markets, like Spain or Italy, where people consider that they shouldn’t pay for something they can get for free, and this countries will surely raise some problems on the music industry.
The increase of pirated products, especially by illegal sharing of files, might cause in Europe, until 2015, loses of 240 billion euros and the disappearance of 1,2 million jobs, according to the study conducted by TERA Consultants.
The most affected domains are the creative industries like movies, music, software and TV. In 2008, because of pirated products, the loses were around 10 billion dollars, and the number of lost jobs were at around 186.000.
