Google has released Google Font Directory and Google Font API, to help organize fonts on the Internet.
One of the major problems of Internet fonts is that they are complicated and that they can create install problems. Google, through their new application, is trying to encourage the developers to create new distinctive and elegant typefaces in their designs.
The solution from Google, enters a market what is somewhat dominated by TypeKit of FontDeck, that offers a complicated library of fonts. Typekit has many commercial partnership and offers good prices to designers that want to legally use fonts.
The advantage of the new Google application is that the library is going to be built for open source fonts. Google Font API can easily be installed on websites using HTML or JavaScript WebFont Loader, developed with Typekit. It’s possible that this advantage might offer Google what it takes to be number one in this niche, because there are a lot of people who would rather use some good open source fonts rather than paid ones.
