Movies that predicted the future wrong

We do not know for sure what the year 2012 brings, and we don’t know if it will be the end of the world. But we do know what movies were very wrong predicting a specific date as being the ultimate date for the human race. Let’s review some of the cases:

Terminator 2: Judgement Day ( 1991 ).

Based on the internal Terminator Universe logic, at some point computers and artificial intelligence forms are starting to get upset and they decide to put an end to the human race on August 29, 1997. After which, killer robots walk the earth; The objective is to eliminate any living human. The third Terminator movie has delayed the end of the world until July 24, 2004. Happily, that wasn’t the case in real life!

Reign of Fire ( 2002 )

Dragons, flame throwing creatures! This fantasy movie predicated in 2002 that until 2008 some subway digging will unveil mythical creatures, even more, London will be their pray. Happily we didn’t see London brought to ashes, although it was interesting to see these kind of creatures at the Zoo.

Blade Runner ( 1982 )

From the Ridley Scott movie perspective, in 2019, nine years from now, out world will be over crowded. In it, robots looking like humans but superior as force as intellect ( named The Replicants ) will play a very important role. If until now we haven’t seen any robots like these, we would require a very sudden technological leap that this may be possible until 2019. It would have been better to have robots like these? Only to do our chores around the house, so that people can enjoy a sunny day at the beach.

Back to the future ( 1989 )

If we were to believe the movie, in year 2015 we should have flying skateboards and clothes that dry themselves. And on the big screen we might watch Jaws 25! Not that something like this is very close, but it’s hard to believe that Jaws will release another 21 sequels in only 5 years.  However the movie might make you think about the 80s, which, in my opinion, were the real golden years.

Nineteen Eighty-Four ( 1956 )

Inspired by the George Orwell novel, the movie anticipated that in year 1984 the world might be caught in a totalitarian  system, where humans were the subjects of total supervision. Even if something like this never existed in history, nowadays we’re not far from the world of Edmund O’Brien in the movie. In the west, a regular man is filed on average 300 times / day. However, it’s a good thing that the society from this movie remained a fiction.

The Time Machine ( 1960 )

In this movie, scientist George travels in time, goes through the two world wars and ends up in 1966, in the middle of another world war, in which London was a main target. If time travel is interesting, this kind of perspective is very frightening.
