La Tomatina, the baby jumping festival, Hadakja Matsuri ori the orange festival are among the celebrations in the world which can be considered the weirdest, taking into consideration the events that occur as part of these festivals.
In Bunol, Spain, almost 40.000 people gather each year and throw very ripe tomatoes at each other, ” La Tomatina” takes place in the last Wensday of August. Thousands of tourists come each year in Bunol especially for this event.
The festival lasts one week and it was officially recognized in 1952.
Other than the tomatoes fight, visitors can also see parades, dancing or fireworks.
In England, there is a festival in which men run after a role of cheese on the top of hill Coopers, in Gloucestershire. The first prize is … cheese!
The event takes place on the last Monday of May.
Hadaka Matsuri, the nudity festival, takes place in Japan. In many places in the country, dozens of people are dressed in fundoshi, traditional underwear and throw mud and water at each other, as part of a ritual that symbolizes purification. Every year, almost 9.000 men are taking part at this purification ritual.
In Kawasaki, Japan, men dressed in woman’s clothing carry an altar shaped as a penis during the Kanamara festival or Utamaro. This is an ancient fertility festival and it’s purpose is to bring harmony to married couples. The biggest celebration of the festival takes place in the first Sunday of April.
Since year 1620, in Castrillo, Spain, there is a festival about jumping above babies. The man disguised in devil jump above babies on the street in order to absolve the little ones of their sins. The event is known of El Colacho and celebrates the Holy Spirit.
The Orange festival takes places in Ivrea, Italy, every year. So, an orange battle in which residents are dressed in medieval suits. The teams of orange throwers celebrate a popular movement that took place in 1266 against tirany, when people threw food at their oppressors.
